PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

 

Responsible for the coordination, project management and implementation of cross-functional and specialized projects, including installation, testing, commissioning and fault finding of power system related apparatus. To safeguard continuity of supply, ensure safety of personnel and safety of apparatus.  In addition, the incumbent is responsible for the strategic planning and design of NamPower’s Protection, Automation and Control (PAC) systems, including PAC refurbishment and grid modernization. The role champions the introduction of advanced grid technologies to enhance grid visibility, availability and controllability, while leading a team of engineers within the Projects and Multidisciplinary Section of PTM&C.

  KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

 

  • Develop and implement PAC strategies, refurbishment programmes and technology roadmaps aligned with NamPower’s operational requirements and long-term grid development objectives
  • Lead the development and review of PAC schemes, protection & control logics and technical specifications. Ensure PAC designs are aligned with protection philosophies, engineering standards and system requirements
  • Coordinate and manage cross-functional and specialised projects from planning and design through procurement, installation, commissioning and handover, ensuring delivery within approved scope, budget, timelines and quality requirements
  • Develop and review test procedures, conduct and/or witness Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and ensure identified defects are resolved before equipment acceptance and handover for operation
  • Conduct and coordinate the maintenance of PAC systems and associated electrical installations in substations and control rooms to ensure equipment reliability, availability and operational readiness
  • Perform fault events analysis to identify root causes and recommend corrective measures
  • Review and update electrical drawings, protection scheme logics, settings and all relevant technical documentations to adapt to existing and new philosophies
  • Represent NamPower in technical forums, project meetings and third-party negotiations. Maintain effective working relationships with landowners, municipalities, regional electricity distributors, mines, suppliers, contractors and other stakeholder
  • Lead, mentor and manage the performance of engineers within the section, allocate workloads and support succession planning, technical development and knowledge transfer

QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCES:

 

  • B Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (NQF Level 7/8)
  • Registered as a Professional or Incorporated Engineer with the Engineering Council of Namibia
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ practical experience in power system protection, automation and control environment
  • At least three (3) years supervisory experience
  • Must have a valid code B driver’s license

SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES:

 

  • Must have sound knowledge of safety requirement to ensure safety working conditions during maintenance in Prohibited Areas
  • Knowledge of the NamPower transmission network
  • In depth knowledge and practical experience in IEC 61850 and digital substation applications
  • In depth knowledge of Operation Technology (OT)
  • Ability to analyse complex system events
